Library Database Search Instruction Plan

The Library Database Search Instruction Plan, an information literacy lesson plan for new and transfer u dergraduates was developed specifically to address a need in higher education Information Literacy initiatives: How to teach students to use scholarly databases and research articles as information sources when they are very used to searching Google. This plan has already been the basis of a “live” Information Literacy one-shot course taught as part of an internship at Colorado State University’s Morgan Library and was also used as the basis for an online Information Literacy module designed to integrate with the online Agricultural Science 116 core course at that same institution. It addresses and meets PLO1 by using fundamental librarianship skills and theories to improve information literacy teaching practice. Because of this, the project also closely follows the ACRL Framework for Information Literacy standard #3: Information has value, #4: Research as inquiry, and #6: Searching as strategic exploration. ALA Ethics 1 and 8, regarding accurate and equitable access to information sources and striving for excellence in the profession.
