60050 Summer 2022 Final research proposal - Seelmeyer.pdf

First-Generation University Students' Use of the Academic Library and What They Find Valuable

The First-Generation University Students' Use of the Academic Library and What They Find Valuable research proposal is one half of what became a two-part project spanning two classes (60050 coupled with 60515: The Academic Library), with the specific goal of looking at the first-generation undergraduate experience in the academic library, what information these students need that they are not currently receiving, and how addressing that gap might benefit the entire campus. Ultimately, this proposal helped me define a research and publication agenda that I hope to address in the near future. This project, therefore, meets PLO2 in that a research problem and question were identified, existing research was reviewed, critiqued, and assessed to develop the proposed study, and appropriate research methods were identified. Because of this approach and because of the setting (academic library) the project also meets the ACRL Standards for Libraries in Higher Education 3: Education, 4: Discovery, and 7.6: Assessment. ALA Ethics 1, 3, and 8 regarding proving reputable and accurate information, ensuring the privacy of patrons, and striving for excellence in the profession, were used as guiding principles.
